Course Description:
The Emergency Medical Responder (EMT) is a 3-unit course that prepares students with the preparation to provide emergency prehospital assessment and care for patients for of all ages, with a variety of medical conditions and traumatic injuries. Areas of study include an introduction to the emergency medical systems, anatomy and physiology, medical and trauma emergencies and special considerations for working in the prehospital settings. This course meets and or exceeds all the requirements as specified in the California Code of Regulations, Title 22, Division 9, Advanced First Aid Standards for Public Safety Personnel and the National Standard Curriculum for EMR.


Policy for Email Contact Between Students and Instructors:
All email contact between students and instructors must be done via the College of the Desert (COD) email. Emails from other non-COD accounts will not be responded to Emails will be answered in 24 hours Monday-Thursday

Student Learning Outcomes:
· Describe the roles of Emergency Medical Systems (EMS) in the health care system.
· Demonstrate the professional attributes expected of EMR.


Course Objectives

  • Describe the roles of EMS in the healthcare system
    · Demonstrate the professional attributes expected from EMR’s
    · Perform roles and responsibilities of an EMR with regard to personal safety and wellness, and the safety of others.
    · Perform the duties of an EMR with regard to medical-legal and ethical issues, including functioning under medical direction and within a scope of practice.
    · Apply principles of anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, lifespan development, and therapeutic communications to the assessment and management of patients.
    · Identify the need for and perform life-saving interventions to manage a patient’s airway, breathing, and circulation.
    · Assess and manage patients of all ages with a variety of complaints, medical
    conditions, and traumatic injuries.
    · Apply principles of emergency medical services operations, including considerations in ambulance and air medical transportation, Multi-casualty events, extricating and gaining access to patients, hazardous materials incidents, and responding to situations involving weapons of mass destruction.
  • Identify and implement treatment for the following groups, special populations, pediatric, and geriatric.


Course Requirements

  • EMR 080 is a positive attendance course. Each student will be responsible for notifying the instructor of an absence prior to the start of any class. Failing to attend a class may result in the student being dropped from the program.
    · It is the responsibility of the student to obtain missed information or assignments.
    · As a professional, you are expected to arrive on time and be prepared for the day’s activities. This includes reading the assignments designated in the provided schedule before you come to Zoom class. Participation will center on the required readings. Continued tardiness or excessive absence will result in educational counseling, meeting with the EMS Program Director, and/or being dropped from the course/program.
    · This course covers 21 chapters but not all chapters will be covered during lecture or in class. It is the student’s responsibility to read and understand the information in the text.
    · It is the student’s responsibility to drop themselves from the course.

    Attendance Policy:

Class attendance is not a measure of performance or proficiency.
Whether a student is just physically present in the class is not a valid basis for
grading. Reference Title 5 Section 55002 of the California Code of Regulations: (A)
Grading Policy.
The course provides for measurement of student performance in terms of stated
course objectives and culminates in a formal, permanently recorded grade based upon uniform standards in accordance with section 55758 of this Division.
The grade is based on demonstrated proficiency in the subject matter and the ability to demonstrate that proficiency, at least in part, by means of written expression that may include essays, or, in courses where the curriculum committee deems them to be appropriate, by problem-solving exercises by students.

Course Completion Requirements:
Students will be eligible for EMR certification if they meet all the requirements.

  • Students must achieve a score of 80% or greater for the final exam and a minimum of 80% overall cumulative score for successful completion of the class. Students who fail to achieve an overall cumulative grade of 80% or greater will not be allowed to course complete.
    · The student must complete an American Heart Association Basic Life Support (CPR) Health Care Provider course and upload a copy of the Ecard to Canvas. Failure to do so will result in the student not completing the course and will receive an “F” grade. This certification is not included in the EMR course.


Written Quizzes and Testing:
· There will be quizzes during the semester given each week. All quizzes will be
administered by a method and under a timeframe to be determined by the instructor.
The instructor has the right to administer pop quizzes at any time during the semester to assess the learning progress of the students and to enhance the comprehension of the material.
· Scheduled quizzes will take place on Canvas and are the student’s responsibility to be aware of.
· Participation is worth 5% of your grade.


Homework:
· There will be weekly homework assignments given to you by the instructor that will correspond to the material that is covered in class. Completion of these assignments will not only give you a greater comprehension of the topics but class participation points as well. You will earn points for each assignment completed.
· Discussion Questions -The initial post by the student is due by 11:59 pm on Thursday and two (2) replies to classmates must completed by 11:59 pm Sunday.
· Homework is worth 20% of your grade.


Modules Quizzes & Final Exams:
· There will be Chapter Quizzes and midterm and final exams given, this will cover all material presented up to a predetermined date in class. The length of the exam shall be determined by instructors.
· The Quizzes are worth 20%, and the Midterm and Final exams are worth 27.5%.

NO MAKEUP WILL BE ALLOWED FOR QUIZZES, HOMEWORK, MIDTERM,
FINAL, OR SKILLS TESTING. NO EXCEPTIONS.
DISCIPLINE POLICY
In order to maintain a healthy learning environment and give every student the best chance of success, the following rules will be followed, with penalties for infractions listed below.


RULES for STUDENTS:
· Be in the classroom at the designated start time.
· Students will wear appropriate clothing to all class meetings
· Respect fellow students and instructors. Disrespectful speech to fellow students or instructors will not be tolerated.
· No cell phone use during lectures


PENALTIES for BREAKING THE RULES:

  • 1st Offense: Verbal warning (Written documented)
    · 2nd Offense: Student to leave class and receive one-day absence. The student will complete a writing assignment of no less than one page identifying their offenses and how they intend to correct them prior to being re-admitted to class.
    · 3rd Offense: Student will be dropped from the course. If this occurs past the “drop date” for the course, the student will receive an “F” grade.
    Students with Disabilities Statement:
    Students with disabilities whether learning or psychological, who believe that they may need accommodations in this class are encouraged to contact Disabled Students Programs and Services (DSPS) as soon as possible to ensure that such accommodations are implemented in a timely fashion. Please meet with DSPS staff to verify your eligibility for any classroom accommodations and for academic assistance related to your disability.
    DSPS is in the Craven's Student Services building located on the main college campus. Students who will be using DSPS services shall notify the instructor immediately during the first week of the semester and not on the day of the exam.

Academic Integrity:
Cheating/Plagiarism is defined as obtaining or attempting to obtain credit for work using any dishonest, deceptive, fraudulent, or unauthorized means. Helping someone commit an act of academic dishonesty is also considered cheating. Examples include but are not limited to: Unacceptable examination behavior communicating with fellow students, Copying material from another student’s exam or allowing another student to copy from an exam, possessing or using unauthorized materials, or any behavior that defeats the intent of an exam.

Plagiarism is the taking of the work of another and offering it as one’s own without giving credit to that source, whether that material is paraphrased or copied in verbatim or near-verbatim form. Unauthorized collaboration on a project, homework, or other assignment where an instructor expressly forbids such collaboration.
Documentary falsification including forgery, altering of campus documents or
records, tampering with grading procedures, fabricating lab assignments, or altering any written material.


AI (Artificial Intelligence)
All assignments must be in the student's own words, you may not use wording copied or used from Artificial Intelligence. All material will be checked for the use of AI interface. Any material that appears more than 80% similar to material diagnosed as AI will not be accepted and brought to the attention of the EMS Program Director for possible further disciplinary action.
Consequences of cheating/plagiarism may include: Receive an “F” in the
course. Receive a 0 on that assignment. Be referred to the Director of the Public
Safety Academy for further disciplinary action. A penalized student will not be
permitted to avoid the academic penalty grade by withdrawing from the course with a “W” grade without consent of the instruction Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (F.E.R.P.A.)
The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) (20 U.S.C. § 1232g; 34
CFR Part 99) is a Federal law that protects the privacy of student education records. FERPA gives parents certain rights with respect to their children's education records. These rights transfer to the student when he or she reaches the age of 18 or attends a school beyond the high school level.

As college students, all FERPA rights transfer to you. As such, under no circumstances will I (the professor) discuss your enrollment in this course, assignments, homework, participation, grades, etc. with anyone other than you,

Course Catalog Description:
This course presents students with the preparation to provide emergency

Course Catalog Description:


This course presents students with the preparation to provide emergency
prehospital assessment and care for patients of all ages, with a variety of medical conditions and traumatic injuries. Areas of study include emergency medical systems, roles, and responsibilities of the EMR, anatomy and physiology, medical and trauma emergencies, and special considerations for working in the
prehospital setting.
This course prepares students for the National Registry of EMR written and cognitive exams if taken for states outside of California and prepares the student for the Emergency Medical Technician Course.

Grading Scale:
A = 90% - 100%
B = 80% - 89.9%
F = 79.9% <

Instructor Drop Policy
The instructor does not drop students. It is a student’s responsibility to drop this
course if needed.


Academic Integrity
In accordance with the College of the Desert’s Student Code of Conduct, cheating and plagiarism will not be tolerated. Incidents of cheating and/or plagiarism will result in a failing grade on the work and a report filed with the Office of Student Life.


Classroom Conduct
• Be on time for class.
• No food or drinks (except for water) allowed in class.
• All cell phones must be turned off during class.
• Be respectful of other class members.
• All assignments must be appropriate for the entire class.
• All assignments should be the original work of the student.
• No assignments should be recycled from other classes.


Course Requirements:


EMR 080 is a positive attendance course, which requires a minimum of 90 hours
of class for completion. Participation and attendance will be calculated as a
portion of your grade. It is the responsibility of the student to obtain missed information or assignments.

As a professional, you are expected to arrive on time and be prepared for the
day’s activities. This includes reading the assignments designated in the provided schedule before you come to class. Participation will center on the required readings. Continued tardiness or excessive absence will result in educational counseling, meeting with the EMT Program Director, and/or being dropped from the course/program.
It is the student’s responsibility to drop themselves from the course.


Attendance Policy:
Attendance Policy: (Class attendance is not a measure of performance or

Absences, tardiness, and leaving early: Students who miss more than 10% of the class at any point during the semester shall be immediately dismissed from the course for excessive absences.


Course Completion Requirements:


Students will be eligible for EMR certification if they meet all the requirements
stipulated below:
• Students must achieve a score of a minimum of 80% overall cumulative score
for successful completion of the class. Students who fail to achieve an overall
cumulative grade of 80% or greater will not be allowed to course complete.
• Must pass all practical skills. Students who do not pass all practical skills will
be issued no greater than a ‘D’ for the course and will not be allowed to complete the course.

Quizzes:
There will be quizzes during the semester given each week. All quizzes will be
administered by a method and under a time frame to be determined by the instructor.


Quizzes will be worth 20% of your grade.


Midterm and Final Exam:


There will be a Midterm exam given, which will cover all material presented up to a predetermined date in class. The length of the exam shall be determined by the instructors. The Final exam will cover all material in the textbook. The length of the exam shall be determined by the instructors.
The midterm and final combined will be worth 55% of your grade.

Skills Testing:


All skills will be tested during the course of the semester at a time to be
determined by the instructor. You must ultimately pass ALL skills for successful
course completion. During the practical skills examinations, the student will be
able to remediate a maximum of TWO skill stations. The student MUST pass the remediated stations on the second attempt. Failure of greater than two skills or failure of the remediated stations will result in a FAILURE of the practical skills test and a failure of the class / unsuccessful course completion.
Skills testing is on a Pass/Fail basis.

Assignments:

There will be weekly homework assignments given to you by the instructor that
will correspond to the material that is covered in class. Assignments will include
discussion questions and vocabulary.
Completion of these assignments will not only give you a greater comprehension of the topics but class participation points as well. You will earn points for each assignment completed. Assignments will be worth 20% of your grade.
NOTE: Homework assignments are a mandatory element of the course. Hours
spent completing homework assignments count toward the required “hybrid” hours.

Uniform and Grooming
The following mandatory dress guidelines shall be followed:
• Students shall be in full uniform at any time they are at class, clinical site
• Your uniform must be neat, clean, well-fitting, unwrinkled, and free of animal
hair.
• You may not wear heavy perfumes or colognes.
• Your hair must be neat, naturally colored, and maintained off your face – hair
must be kept off the collar.
• Fingernails must be clean and no longer than ½ inch. If polished, a pale-colored polish must be used.
• Men must be clean-shaven. Mustaches will be allowed (not beyond the corner of the mouth) but must be neatly maintained/trimmed.
• Each student must practice appropriate personal hygiene.
• Visible body jewelry/piercings shall be removed while in uniform. No earrings
will be allowed.
• Any visible tattoos shall be covered while in uniform.
Any student not in a full and/or appropriate uniform fails to wear their uniform,
or is in violation of any of the abovementioned grooming standards shall be excused from class to give the student an opportunity to correct his/her deficiency. If a student is excused for a violation, the student will receive at minimum a “leave early” or” tardy” providing he/she returns to class
before the class session ends. Students who fail to return shall receive an absence for that class number.

Respect and Professionalism:


Students will show respect for: other students, instructors, faculty members,
facilities staff, and field internships. staff, and all other EMS/EMR professionals at ALL times.
• Instructors will be addressed as Sir/Ma’am OR Instructor (Last name), any
other title for instructors is unacceptable.
• When addressing any non-EMS faculty, they will also be addressed as Sir/Ma’am
• In the clinical and ride-out setting, you will address the preceptors by their title, then last name. For example, Instructor Kang

Cell Phone Policy:
The use of cellular phones in the Zoom classroom/skills lab is strictly prohibited
(unless given expressed consent from an instructor). Cell phones and their use
during class are counter-productive to a positive learning environment and are a
distraction to the instructor and fellow students. This includes, but is not limited
to; phone calls, text messaging, email, gaming, photography, or any application
capable on a particular phone. The instructor will give regular breaks during class which will allow students to take care of personal business.
The above Cell Phone policy shall be strictly enforced and any student in violation of this policy will be excused from the class, receive an “Absence” for the class, and receive a written reprimand in their file, Additional sanctions may be imposed on the student, and will be at the discretion of the instructor.

 

Smoking/Tobacco Policy:

ALL College of the Desert campuses and facilities are tobacco-free areas. Smoking, E-cigs, Vapes, Chewing tobacco, and any other forms of tobacco are NOT allowed on campus at any time.
The above Smoking/Tobacco policy shall be strictly enforced and any student in
violation of this policy will be excused from the class, and receive an “Absence” for the class.

International Students Studying emergency medicine in a foreign language is challenging. Therefore, all international students may use official translators during exams.

Cell phones cannot be used as translators. Also, if you have any questions about definitions or content please see me after class, come to my office hours, or make an
appointment to talk to me.
