Introduction

Unit/Module 5 provides a conceptual framework for voting, elections and the impact of public opinion.  It answers some fundamental questions, e.g., How is public opinion measured and how accurate is it? What motivates people to register to vote and actually vote? How are elections actually run? 

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • Describe the role of Congress in the U.S. constitutional system
  • Explain the reason for the design of the executive branch and its plausible alternatives
  • Describe the evolving role of the courts since the ratification of the Constitution

You will Demonstrate Mastery of Unit 5 by being able to:

  • Analyze the impact of racial and partisan gerrymandering on the Congressional redistricting process.
  • Assess the advantages and disadvantages of the Electoral College
  • Describe how the Supreme Court decides cases and issues opinions
