Student’s Name xxxxxxxx xxxxxxxx1. Title: Despite Supreme Court’s Ruling On DACA, Trump Administration RejectsNew Applicants2. Source: npr.org3. Date: July 15, 20204. What is it about? The article covers the topic of DACA (Deferred Action forChildhood Arrivals), which assists eligible immigrants in the United States whowere brought as children by protecting them from deportation and allow them to getwork permits. The application was recently allowed by the Supreme Court tocontinue. However, they have been denied by the Trump administration becausethey claim that they are is not accepting new first-time applications and onlyprocessing renewals. Since then, several individuals have expressed theirdisappointment with the status of the applications, and have even said that thedecision violates the Supreme Court’s ruling, and because they approved it, theruling should be in effect and operating as it was supposed to. However, otherparties, such as the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Status have questioned theconstitutionality of the program, even suggesting that because of it, illegalimmigrants continue to live in the U.S. and are taking jobs from Americans. TheTrump administration is no exception, with claims that DACA was illegally createdby former President Barack Obama. However, toward the end of the article,Trump’s tendency to flip-flop on his stance on DACA and his seemingly softenedstance on it now is acknowledged; he implied that he would be working on and dealing with DACA, as well as signing an immigration act in the near future.

In spite of the current President’s claims, immigrants remain skeptical, and organizations

such as the National Immigration Law Center, believe that Trump is purposely

putting off and delaying any progress for the program, but that immigrant advocatesare ready to return to court in defense of it, and potentially force the reopening of it.5. My opinion: The controversy of the topic is the factor that led me to read andreview the article. I believe that DACA provides a fair opportunity for immigrantswho wish to come the United States to create a life for themselves with morepromising opportunities. When an immigrant applies and fits the qualifications, theyshould be accepted. That is how applications work. To be denied despite followingprocedures and doing what is required is outrageous, especially when the programwas ruled to continue a month ago. For the Trump administration to say that theyare not accepting new applicants is unacceptable, especially when there arethousands of applicants who are waiting to apply or to be accepted. It would be onething if President Trump made himself clear on what his stance with the program is.However, he continually switches his stance on the matter, claiming that he doesnot support it at one moment, and saying that he wants to work on it the next.https://www.npr.org/2020/07/15/891563635/trump-administration-rejects-1st-time-daca-applications-violates-scotus-order (Links to an external site.)

RESPONSE #1 TO ANOTHER STUDENT’S POST

Very interesting. On one hand, yes, I agree those who are already in the hospital orshowing symptoms should have priority when it comes to testing, as well as essentialworkers who perform in high-risk settings. Additionally, testing has been conducting forseveral months without much structure, to the point where resources are spread thin. Ifthis strategy helps organize how people receive a test and reduces chaos, then I am allfor it. We can only hope that this system does not affect people negatively, particularly if

those who are asymptomatic suddenly show symptoms of being infected and cannot betested as soon as possible. Furthermore, testing should not be entirely necessary if we,as you said, do our part and help stop the spread. Thank you for sharing this.------------------------------------------------------------from Politics in the News – WEEK 3Jul 16, 2020 5:04pm

RESPONSE #2 TO ANOTHER STUDENT’S POST

I was not aware of this before reading this. Thank you for sharing. It is a shame that thevirus is not only affecting people physically, but is also separating them. We now live ina world where fear dictates our actions more so than ever before. It is sad to read thatthis is occurring in Italy, especially when reading about you visiting and witnessing thecaring nature of the community there. There are only so many options currentlyavailable to retreat elsewhere to gain some sort of temporary peace. It is unfortunatethat they have to deal with prejudice and rejection as well as the virus.
