INITIAL POST
Student’s Name xxxxxxxx xxxxxxxx1. Title: Despite Supreme Court’s Ruling On DACA, Trump Administration Rejects
New Applicants
2. Source: npr.org
3. Date: July 15, 2020
4. What is it about? The article covers the topic of DACA (Deferred Action for
Childhood Arrivals), which assists eligible immigrants in the United States who
were brought as children by protecting them from deportation and allow them to get
work permits. The application was recently allowed by the Supreme Court to
continue. However, they have been denied by the Trump administration because
they claim that they are is not accepting new first-time applications and only
processing renewals. Since then, several individuals have expressed their
disappointment with the status of the applications, and have even said that the
decision violates the Supreme Court’s ruling, and because they approved it, the
ruling should be in effect and operating as it was supposed to. However, other
parties, such as the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Status have questioned the
constitutionality of the program, even suggesting that because of it, illegal
immigrants continue to live in the U.S. and are taking jobs from Americans. The
Trump administration is no exception, with claims that DACA was illegally created
by former President Barack Obama. However, toward the end of the article,
Trump’s tendency to flip-flop on his stance on DACA and his seemingly softened
stance on it now is acknowledged; he implied that he would be working on and dealing with DACA, as well as signing an immigration act in the near future.
In spite of the current President’s claims, immigrants remain skeptical, and organizations
such as the National Immigration Law Center, believe that Trump is purposely
are ready to return to court in defense of it, and potentially force the reopening of it.
5. My opinion: The controversy of the topic is the factor that led me to read and
review the article. I believe that DACA provides a fair opportunity for immigrants
who wish to come the United States to create a life for themselves with more
promising opportunities. When an immigrant applies and fits the qualifications, they
should be accepted. That is how applications work. To be denied despite following
procedures and doing what is required is outrageous, especially when the program
was ruled to continue a month ago. For the Trump administration to say that they
are not accepting new applicants is unacceptable, especially when there are
thousands of applicants who are waiting to apply or to be accepted. It would be one
thing if President Trump made himself clear on what his stance with the program is.
However, he continually switches his stance on the matter, claiming that he does
not support it at one moment, and saying that he wants to work on it the next.

RESPONSE #1 TO ANOTHER STUDENT’S POST
Very interesting. On one hand, yes, I agree those who are already in the hospital or
showing symptoms should have priority when it comes to testing, as well as essential
workers who perform in high-risk settings. Additionally, testing has been conducting for
several months without much structure, to the point where resources are spread thin. If
this strategy helps organize how people receive a test and reduces chaos, then I am all
for it. We can only hope that this system does not affect people negatively, particularly if
those who are asymptomatic suddenly show symptoms of being infected and cannot be
tested as soon as possible. Furthermore, testing should not be entirely necessary if we,
as you said, do our part and help stop the spread. Thank you for sharing this.

RESPONSE #2 TO ANOTHER STUDENT’S POST
I was not aware of this before reading this. Thank you for sharing. It is a shame that the
virus is not only affecting people physically, but is also separating them. We now live in
a world where fear dictates our actions more so than ever before. It is sad to read that
this is occurring in Italy, especially when reading about you visiting and witnessing the
caring nature of the community there. There are only so many options currently
available to retreat elsewhere to gain some sort of temporary peace. It is unfortunate
that they have to deal with prejudice and rejection as well as the virus.
