Criterion 1: 6-10 Sentences

  • Falls between 6-10 sentences (12 points)
  • A sentence over or under (9 points)
  • Two sentences over or under (6 points)
  • Three sentences over or under (3 points)
  • Four sentences over or under (1 point)

Criterion 2: Grammar and Clarity

  • Well-written; clear; easy to understand (12 points)
  • Well-written with some errors (9 points)
  • Multiple errors; difficult to understand at times (6 points)
  • Multiple errors; difficult to understand (3 points)
  • Poorly written; very difficult to understand (1 point)

Criterion 3: Hook/Opening Sentence

  • Intriguing opening sentences; avoids vague, generic statements (12 points)
  • Good opening sentence(s); avoids vague generic statements (9 points)
  • May have decent opening sentence(s); may contain vague, generic statements (4 points)
  • May have sub par opening sentence(s); may contain vague, generic statements (3 points)
  • Has sub par opening sentence(s) and vague, generic statements (1 point)

Criterion 4: Thesis

  • Clearly articulated, complete thesis; provides not only the first part of a thesis (For example: Isolationism is in the best interest of the U.S. and its citizens) but a whole thesis (Isolationism is in the best interest of the U.S. and its citizens because democracies that have advocated for isolationism have thrived domestically in terms of economic and social policy) (14 points)
  • Tries to offer complete thesis but part of the thesis is not grounded in fact and/or hard to understand logically (10 points)
  • Thesis may not be grounded in fact and/or hard to understand logically; incomplete thesis statement (doesn't address 'why' you are arguing in favor of one position over another) (6 points)
  • Incomplete thesis statement (doesn't address 'why' you are arguing in favor of one position over another) (2 points)
  • No clear thesis statement (1 point)

Criterion 5: Turnitin

  • Turnitin score received and the score is 35% or lower (no points will be deducted)
  • Turnitin score received and the score is between 36% and 64% (instructor will investigate and compare text with prior submissions and internet publications; you may receive a 20% point deduction off of the points you earn)
  • Did not receive a Turnitin score (for any reason) can't be graded.
