Chapter 10 describes what the fire prevention bureau is and discusses activities it performs. It also provides an overview of different prevention activities and provides guidance on how to implement them. This chapter also discusses the methods of fire prevention and stresses the importance of fire information reporting. The fire service is not entirely focused on suppressing fires but is equally focused on preventing and investigating fires.
Fire codes tend to be reactive, rather than proactive which usually requires a major tragedy to occur before changes are made. Examples of this are evident in the Cocoanut Grove Fire and The Station Fire in which hundreds of people lost their lives due to overcrowding, flammable interior wall coverings and inadequate exiting.
This discussion post will require students to place themselves in a position of a fire inspector that is assigned to inspect a popular nightclub in your community. Upon entering the nightclub you observe tables blocking some of the exits and the stated occupant load has been exceeded by 200 people. You have located the owner of the nightclub (who is also the mayor) to inform him of your fire code violations that you have observed. Simply stating that you will close the business down is not an acceptable solution. You will need to articulate in your initial discussion post a course of action along with a proposed plan to mitigate this life safety hazard. Students must post a minimum of 250 words for this posting.
You must reply to at least two of your classmates postings. A minimum of five sentences are required per reply. Students will have 24 hours after the discussion due date to post peer reviews.
