Legal considerations at emergency incidents are an important aspect in the fire service. As you have learned so far in this course, a career in the fire service has inherent dangers. One of the areas that creates the greatest risk for firefighters is responding to emergency incidents. Driving code 3 with red lights and sirens creates both high risk and high frequency to the potential of a traffic accident. Firefighters that drive fire apparatus are required to possess a Class B drivers license. Driving code 3 can be an adrenaline rush but it comes with great responsibilities to you, your crew and the public.
For this discussion topic, place yourself in the position of an Engineer (driver) on your fire department. You and your engine company are dispatched to a reported structure fire. While enroute, dispatch communicates over the radio that they are receiving numerous reports that two victims are trapped in the burning structure. Your captain acknowledges the updated information and turns to you and says "You need to step on it, there are people depending on us to save their lives!"
You are already traveling 5 mph over the speed limit and traffic conditions are heavy. What will you do and why? Will you go faster than you already are or will you continue at your current speed? Who is ultimately responsible for the operation of the apparatus, you or your captain?
