Marital Relationships Over The Family Life Cycle
- Describe the basic stages of the family life cycle in an intact marriage and in a family in which there is divorce and remarriage.
- Discuss the various trends in marital satisfaction, from the honeymoon stage to late adulthood.
- Summarize the major marital adjustment tasks and problems early in marriage.
- Explain how gay and lesbian families are different from and similar to other types of families.
- Describe the adjustments to parenthood.
- Identify the major adjustments during middle adulthood, including the postparental years.
- Summarize the major adjustment during late adulthood, including divorce.
- Discuss problems of family relationships for elderly and widowed individuals, including alternatives for caring for older people.
Work, Family Roles, and Material Resources
- Relate the challenges and stress many American families experience in balancing the demands of work and family life.
- Describe basic facts about the employment and careers of working parents, their search for life satisfaction, their family members’ ethics and value systems, the role conflict and strain they experience, and the marital adjustments they face.
- Identify adaptive strategies from successful families for balancing work and family.
- Discuss the financial needs of families, the relationship between money and management as a source of harmony or discord.
- Describe effects of poverty and homelessness on family life.
- Explain the concept of the feminization of poverty.
- Describe how the welfare program has changed and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of these changes.

- Recognize and appreciate the impact of the family life cycle on the individual as well as marriage and family relationships.
- Identify characteristics and behaviors associated with developing and sustaining successful relationships across the family life cycle.
- Identify potential problems that take place in marriages and families and demonstrate attitudes and behaviors needed to adjust and cope.

- Answer Discussion Question: What are some ways in which marriages change across time? Consider newlyweds, middle aged couples, and couples in late adulthood.

- Group Activity of Creating a Genogram
- You will have the opportunity to create a group genogram based on information given to you.
Genogram Assignment: The Real Deal
- You will be creating a full genogram that will guide your family of origin paper
- Opportunity to get and ask for feedback on family patterns and the genogram itself.
Chapter 7-8 Reading Quiz & Check-in
- These will be due at the end of Module 4
- Reading quiz will primarily have questions from the readings and to a lesser degree the lectures.
