Welcome to the first week of Principles of Management!

This week you will complete the introduction assignments and Chapter 1.

Quick reminder: Complete assignments in the module called Make Sure You are Ready to be an Online Student. Those assignments are due Sept 1.

Then, it is on to Chapter 1, Managing and Performing. Go to the modules and download the Chapter 1 Lecture for support of the readings.

Things to note:

Watch the Leadership Video on slide 6. It is a wonderful reminder that anyone can be a leader - including you!
Slide 8 shows a video of the four functions of management, which includes planning, organizing, leading, and controlling. We will explore each of these areas in depth over the semester. What do managers really do? Do you have experience as a manager? Did you know the company's vision? Did knowing it (or not knowing it) influence your ability to do the job?
Look over slides 10-11 on roles managers play. Where do you see yourself now - informational, interpersonal, or decisional? You can be more than one. What areas would you like to improve n the future?
Slide 17 discusses the different levels of management, with needed skills varying by where a manager falls. You can see in slide 18-19 that skills needed vary according to a person’s level and responsibilities in an organization. What skills do you have in each? How can you improve?
The discussion for this week is based on the video on slide 25. Think about what Simon Simek says about knowing your Why. Do you know yours?

Remember, your first discussion post for Chapter 1 has deadlines this week as well. Your initial post is due Thursday at 11:59 PM, and then responses to two classmates is due Sunday at 11:59 PM. These posts and responses need to be detailed and researched, like an essay. Word count is 150-200 words for your initial post and 75-100 words for each reply.
