Welcome!
Welcome!
Welcome to Principles of Management for the Fall 2024 semester.
My name is Dottie Sutherland. I want to welcome you to our class and ensure you get started on the right foot. This class will be a 16-week lecture course that will meet Monday and Wednesday from 2-320PM. I will be your collaborator and facilitator- guiding you throughout the semester.
This course has three major learning outcomes:
- Perform a market analysis using the strength, weakness, opportunity, threats (SWOT) framework
- Explain the impact, roles, skills, and responsibilities of managers in planning, influencing, organizing, and controlling organizational activities.
- State and implement tools, techniques, and strategies needed for effective management.
There is a variety of specific objectives embedded in the learning outcomes, and you may have your own personal goals as well. We're going to do our best to cover everything in a way that is interesting and relevant. Advanced preparation before class...and your participation in class will also transform the value of your experience.
Below is some information that will help you successfully engage in this course.

- Although we meet in-person, you will complete outside work through the Canvas platform. Adopt the habit of logging on to the Canvas portal everyday to check announcements and complete your work. Each week, I will post new reminders about upcoming due dates.
- In addition to your class attendance, anticipate devoting extra hours of study per week.
- The College offers a wide variety of student services. A list of these services and contact information is available on the College’s website.
- If you're new to college, or if you have questions or concerns along the way, please don't hesitate to contact me as soon as possible. Many problems can be easily resolved in their early stages whereas waiting can often make the problem worse or even unsolvable. My goal is always to help! The best way to contact me is through your Canvas email. My goal is to respond within 24 hours (with the exception of weekends and holidays where I'll try to get back by the next working day).
