Being Successful in this Course

"Oh, I can do that later. . ."

I want you to be successful in this course! Each week you will have reading, and some weeks there is a large amount of reading. As a result, it's definitely to your advantage to do the required readings before each class. The course calendar indicates the pages we will be discussing in class for each class lecture. Follow the weekly schedule and stay on top of your reading assignments.

Course Syllabus

The course syllabus contains important information about class procedures, due dates, grading policies, etc. It's a guideline for what you can expect of me and what I expect of you throughout the term.

Student Activities:

In order to achieve the student learning outcomes (SLOs) you will be evaluated through the following assignments:

  • Quizzes: These quizzes are in class at the beginning of the class period on the days indicated on the Course Calendar. They are short and multiple choice and fill in the blank. Quizzes are timed to last 15-20 minutes, depending on the Quiz.
  • Exams: To assess general knowledge of course material and critical thinking skills, students will have 4 course exams.
  • Discussion/Class Participation: To make sure students engage each other over the material, each student will be granted points based on their participation in class discussions and participation. Participation in the class is a good way to earn points in the class!
  • Class Attendance: Students will receive points for attending class. This is the easiest way to get points in the course! We will be engaging in a quick, but fun, attendance activity each class meeting.

How To Contact Me and Office Hours:

Contact: There are several ways you can contact me: my cell phone (970-443-1676) or email (dwrobinson@collegeofthedesert.edu). A few words about e-mail. I do not check my e-mail constantly during the day. If I am busy with class preparation, I may have to ignore my e-mail for 24-hours (sometimes more). Please be patient if I do not respond immediately. Also, craft your e-mail messages carefully, and write with more attention to wording and details than you normally would. E-mail is notorious for miscommunication of motivations, intentions, and emotions. Thank you!

Office Hours: I hold office hours on Wednesdays at 12:30 – 1:30 pm. You can reach me on my cell (970) 443-1676, TEXT or Zoom.
