Week #1 Overview

COVERED CHAPTERS: 1 & 2

After reviewing Chapter 1, students should understand the scope and goals of the emergency medical responder (EMR) training and the structure of emergency medical care delivery systems. The emergency medical responder’s roles, responsibilities, and relationship to the emergency medical services (EMS) system are explained, and a description of other levels of EMS providers is included. The importance of medical oversight is stressed.

Upon reviewing Chapter 2, students should  understand the importance of meeting their own emotional needs; assisting patients and families with the emotional aspects of injuries, illness, and/or death; and taking appropriate preventive action to ensure personal safety. The purpose of this chapter is to better prepare emergency medical responders (EMRs) for the stress and tension they will encounter in their work.

Lastly, Chapter 8 covers American Heart Associations Healthcare Provider Basic Life Support and First Aid course for First Responders for  adults, children, and infants.
