Do You Have a Chosen or Preferred Name?
College of the Desert understands the importance of a student's chosen identity and name being recognized by faculty, staff, and other students. A student may have applied to COD with a legal name that did not or no longer reflects their true identity. Those students can request to be identified by their chosen name in certain campus settings. You can request this change by completing the Chosen Name Form.
Name Change
Have you changed you name? You can request to have your name changed on your records at College of the Desert. To do so, you must submit one of the following documents.
- Copy of California Driver License or California ID Card issued showing your new name. (Enlarge and lighten copy so it is easier to read)
- Copy of Social Security Card issued to your new name. (Enlarge copy so it is easier to read)
- A legal, court filed document showing your new name such as marriage license or divorce decree.
- Three documents providing common usage of the name to which you are requesting a change such as utility bills, rental agreement, bank account statement, driver's license from another state, organization membership card, etc.
Use the online form to submit your Name Change (Links to an external site.) request.
Advocate Letter
The College is currently unable to add the Chosen/Preferred Name to class rosters in WebAdvisor. In the meantime, students can utilize the Advocate Letter to assist in having this conversation with their class faculty. This letter can also be used to inform other members of the College of the Desert community of your name preference.
