Attendance, Drops & Adds

Attendance:

Students who disappear and do not submit any work/do not post to the discussion boards for one week, or who consistently post inadequate, non-substantive responses (“good job,” “I agree,” etc.”) may be dropped for lack of active participation. If something is going on, please do let me know, so I can strategize how to help. Students who do not submit their assignments can also be dropped. See also, “Faculty Drops” below.

However, these are not normal times. I will err on doing everything I can to support you through this class.

Faculty Drops/Lack of Participation:

According to the COD Catalog Links to an external site., faculty may drop students who do not attend the first class session (in our case, students who do not participate in the course check-in discussion). You must post to the check-in discussion board. Logging onto Canvas and clicking around or just completing the Syllabus Quiz is not enough to be considered ‘present’ for the first class session. Furthermore, it is the student’s responsibility to drop all classes in which they are no longer participating or attending. It is at the instructor’s discretion to drop a student for non-participation any time during the allowed drop/withdrawal period for the course. A student may be dropped for an excessive number of absences (in our case, two weeks of missing or inadequate work) and/or failure to complete major class assignments (anything except discussions and quizzes). Furthermore, students who remain enrolled in a class beyond the published withdrawal deadline, as stated on the course website’s academic calendar, must receive an evaluative letter grade in the class. (A ‘W’ grade cannot be assigned during final grading for students still appearing on the roster). See the 2022-2023 COD Catalog, pg. 21 Links to an external site.. "FW's" are assigned at the instructor's discretion.

If you anticipate being unavailable for a large period of time (more than a week) for medical reasons or emergency situations for which you can provide valid documentation, you should try to message me ahead of time and/or find a way to get in touch with me or the Social Sciences Department Links to an external site. so you do not get dropped for lack of attendance.

Add Policy:

It is at the instructor’s discretion whether or not and how to issue add codes. Add codes are assigned to a specific student. Misuse of add codes can result in disciplinary action. If students do not enroll within 24 hours of receiving the add code, the instructor reserves the right to assign that code to another student and not reissue an add code for students who fail to enroll in a timely manner. Any student who adds the class must complete the course check-in assignment within 24 hours of adding; otherwise, they can be dropped for failing to “appear in the first lecture.” See the 2022-2023 COD Catalog, pg. 48 Links to an external site..
