A LinkedIn profile is important to ensure you have a professional presence. This was covered briefly in chapter 9 as an important tool as you start and progress in your career. All students a required to submit the URL for their LinkedIn profile. This profile serves as a living resume and should include similar items. There are two parts to this assignment.
Part 1: Create a LinkedIn profile - complete the following:
- Click on www.LinkedIn.com (Links to an external site.)
- Create a LinkedIn account
- Add a professional picture
- Write one or two sentences summarizing your experience or aspirations in the About section (required).
- At a minimum, you should include at least two of the following:
- Work experience - make sure you explain what you do/did (responsibilities), as well as the skills you obtained.
- Education - years attending and major should be included.
- Achievements or certifications
- Note: This should be similar to what is included in a resume. If you lack experience, look for other experiences, like volunteering, that can be added.
- Last: Find someone to connect with or follow (you must have at least one). It can be a friend or someone who works at a company of interest. Go to the search and type in a person's name. Once you get to their page, click the Connect or Follow button.
Note: If you have an existing profile, make sure it is updated to meet the requirements listed above.
Part 2: Reflection to include:
- Thoughts on process: How did this assignment help expand your professional network and online portfolio? Make sure to include what, if anything, you learned during the creation of your profile.
- Networking ideas: Visit the following link and indicate which of the suggestions you plan to implement and why. Please make sure to provide detail. https://content.linkedin.com/content/dam/me/linkedinforgood/en-us/resources/youth/HANDOUT---How-to-Network-for-Students.pdf. Links to an external site.
