About Me!
I came to teaching college relatively late in my career. When I first went to college, I did not want children and was an economics major. I took lots of accounting and business classes. I still love numbers and am very good with math. ( These skills came in handy later). I married while I was still in college and got pregnant pretty quickly. I dropped out of college and decided to stay at home with my baby.
I knew nothing about children or how to be a mother, so I turned to books and read all that I could. My then-husband and I were living in Orange County and wanted to buy a home. Well, OC on one salary doesn't get you much, so we found a house in what is now called Menifee. We moved and my husband commuted with our one car to OC every day. I became a family child care provider to help bring in extra income and found that I really liked children.
When my son was old enough to attend preschool, I enrolled him in a parent-cooperative preschool. Each parent takes turns helping out in the classroom. I discovered a love for teaching young children. I went back to school at Mt. San Jacinto College and earned my AS Degree in Child Development.
After graduating I worked in a parent cooperative preschool as the teacher/director. While I loved it, it was a part-time job and I needed something with full-time pay and benefits. During those years, I divorced. I was now a single mother working several jobs to make ends meet.
I went back to school and earned my BA in Psychology from Chapman University in Fullerton. I remarried and held several different jobs, site supervisor, infant and toddler teacher, after-school provider, director, and child care coordinator. While I was working for the Department of Public Social Services, a friend told me about a Master's degree program at Cal. State San Bernardino. It was an evening program and I enrolled with her.
During my second year of my master's program, I learned about a faculty internship program offered through Riverside Community College. I would be paid a stipend to teach one college class, with a mentor. I signed up and worked with a faculty member from Mt. San Jacinto College. I loved teaching adults! I finished my MA program and when a full-time faculty position opened up at Mt. San Jacinto College, I applied and got it. I taught there for six years and decided it was time to spread my wings. College of the Desert was hiring a full-time faculty member in ECE and I applied and got it! I have been here ever since and it has become home.
I live here in the Valley with my husband, stepson, and two little dogs, Mary and Fiona. I am dedicated to being the best teacher I can be.
