Overview
Students completing this assignment will be meeting Student Learning Outcome:
Describe the role of the early childhood educator, including ethical conduct and professional pathways.
CDE 103 is an entry-level class for students wishing to work with children and families in early childhood education, it is appropriate to complete the class by creating career goals, education plan and a professional portfolio. This project will be the basis for your final exam in this course. Each student will create and present a beginning portfolio.
I understand that many of you don't have much to put in a portfolio, but you will add to it as you take more classes and gain more experience in the field. This is meant to be a beginning to your career.
Students will use One-Note to create a virtual notebook that will contain assigned content. We will build this notebook as we go through the course.
If you are new to using One-Note, access it through the student email portal. I have included a tutorial below and here is a link to Microsoft One-Note Tutorials. Links to an external site.
Of course, our wonderful Tutors can also help you get started with using One-Note as well.
Each portfolio must include:
- A cover page that describes what the portfolio contains with links to the rest of the portfolio pages. Those pages must include at minimum:
- A biography using the reflection questions in the text as a guide.
- Knowledge and Competencies ( I will provide you with the competency areas)
- A Resume ( even if you don't have experience in this field, you have skills! list them)
- Documentation of Immunizations (Needed to work with children in the state of California). If you have trouble getting this due to Covid-19 restrictions, you can put a placeholder to earn these points).
- An education plan that has been developed with a counselor (see below)
See attached Rubric for scoring.
Student Education Plan
As part of the final portfolio project each student is required to meet with a counselor and create a Student Education Plan.
To create your education plan, you have to make an appointment with a counselor. Links to an external site.
If you have less than 15 units, an abbreviated education plan is fine and can be completed in a drop-in session.
If you have 15 units or more, you need a comprehensive education plan and that requires a full appointment. Be sure you plan ahead for this!
To access drop-in counseling, you may email Blanca Morales at blmorales@collegeofthedesert.edu or call 760-773-2521 and leave a message with:
- Name
- Phone Number
- Student ID Number
- And the Reason for the Call
You will be added to our daily list and a counselor will call you back.
You may also go to Cranium Café Links to an external site. via Canvas, scroll down to the General Counseling section, look for an available counselor and click on the “Knock on Door” button.
If you prefer to schedule an appointment for a different day, please follow the steps outlined above for an online appointment.
If you need a Comprehensive Student Education Plan, you will need to schedule an appointment. You can follow the steps above to contact the Blanca Morales and someone will call you to set up an appointment.
