Week Five Overview

 This week we will be discussing environments. Children spend many waking hours in child care or in school settings. How we choose to decorate and furnish those setting, how we schedule the day, and how we interact with the children all have an impact on their growth and development. We spend a lot of time in this field talking about the importance of social and emotional development. Yet, sometimes when I enter a classroom the only value I see displayed is cognitive development ( letters, numbers, shapes, calendar). I will challenge you to think deeply about the idea that school is a child's home away from home. Shouldn't it be designed to maximize the child's comfort? My old friend Lisa Murphy actually can say this much better than I and you will get to see her video later in this module. In the meantime, look at the outside of the Hogwarts Castle, does it look welcoming?
