Learning Objectives
Intimate Relationships, Marriages, and Families; in the 21st Century:
- Learn the definition of family and the various family forms.
- Understand the societal changes in family philosophy and focus including key family concepts of
- Institution to companionships
- Patriarchy to democracy
- Learn basic family trends and statistics in
- marriage and birth rates
- family size and configurations
- gay and lesbian families
- divorce rates and remarriages
- blended families
- Develop a deeper understanding of ethnicity, culture, and race looking at the composition of the U.S. population
- Describe Hispanic, African, Asian/Pacific Islander, and Native American families.
- Explain behavior and patterns in families through family theories and models.
- Describe different types of research design and ways in which to analyze data.
Gender Identity & Roles:
- Define sex, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation and gender role.
- Learn how concepts of masculinity and femininity vary by society and culture.
- Discuss how environmental influences mold masculinity and femininity.
- Describe masculine and feminine stereotypes and norms and the problems they create.
- Discuss gender-role influences in interpersonal relationships between men and women
- Discuss differing expectations and attitudes of various ethnic groups relating how race, class, and gender are related.
- Gender roles in the family and the way they affect housework and child care in families.
- Learn how marital quality can be influenced by gender-role expectations.
- Define androgyny and identity its possible advantages and disadvantages.

- Identify the different types of families and recognize and respect the influence of alternative lifestyles and culture on the individual and marriage and family relationships.
- Identify potential problems that take place in marriages and families and demonstrate attitudes and behaviors needed to adjust and cope.
