CHAPTER 11: FAMILY PLANNING AND PARENTHOOD LEARNING OBJECTIVES
- Outline the reasons for family planning.
- Discuss basic facts about oral contraceptives: how they prevent conception; types and administration; effectiveness; advantages and health benefits; risks; and side effects.
- Discuss basic facts about other forms of hormonal contraceptives.
- Relate basic facts about the use of vaginal spermicides as contraceptives.
- Describe the use of intrauterine devices and other mechanical devices or barrier methods (male condom, female condom, diaphragm, cervical shield, cervical cap, and contraceptive sponge).
- Describe the processes of male and female sterilization (vasectomy and tubal ligation).
- Explain methods of birth control without the use of devices, including the calendar method, withdrawal, and noncoital stimulation.
- Summarize the considerations in choosing which birth control method to use.
- Discuss the legal, moral, social and realistic, and psychological and personal considerations in relation to abortion.
- Summarize the basic facts about infertility (causes; infertility and subjective well-being; treatments; and alternative means of conception).
- Discuss basic issues in relation to adoption and foster care.
- Discuss the basic issues and trends in relation to childlessness, smaller families, and delayed parenthood.
CHAPTER 12: PREGNANCY AND CHILDBIRTH LEARNING OBJECTIVES
- Describe the signs and symptoms of pregnancy, discuss the use of pregnancy tests, and calculate the due date and using Naegele’s formula.
- Discuss the emotional reactions to prospective parenthood and pregnancy and the developmental tasks of pregnancy.
- Explain the importance of prenatal care, including the minor side effects and major complications of pregnancy.
- Discuss teratogens, including examples and their effects.
- Identify the stages of prenatal development.
- Discuss prepared childbirth and the Lamaze method of natural childbirth.
- Demonstrate a basic knowledge of the process of labor and options for delivery.
- Discuss the following topics in relation to postpartum care, decisions, and adjustments: care of the newborn, bonding, rooming in, postpartum adjustments, and returning to work.
CHAPTER 13 PART 1: PARENT-CHILD RELATIONSHIPS LEARNING OBJECTIVES
- Relate how philosophies and emphases in childrearing change over the years and how men and women differ in their views, as to parents and children.
- Describe why cultural and biological differences and life circumstances, as well as differences in children, require varying methods of parenting.
- Discuss parental roles in meeting children’s needs and the importance of sharing responsibilities, including parental involvement in childrearing.

- Recognize and appreciate the impact of the family life cycle on the individual as well as marriage and family relationships.
- Identify characteristics and behaviors associated with developing and sustaining successful relationships across the family life cycle.
- Identify the different types of families and recognize and respect the influence of alternative lifestyles and culture on the individual and marriage and family relationships.
