Module 4 Instructor Guidance

A gerund is a form of a verb that is used as a noun. All gerunds end in -ing. Since gerunds function as nouns, they occupy places in a sentence that a noun would, such as the subject, direct object, and object of a preposition.

The most common kind of errors with gerunds is confusing when to use a gerund or an infinitive. You have to memorize what verbs must be followed by a gerund. Some verbs can be followed by a gerund or an infinitive.

For example:

  • He hates washing windows.  OR  He hates to wash the windows.
  • Samantha likes reading.    OR    Samantha likes to read.

This module has practice and resources to help you gain proficiency in using gerunds and infinitives in your academic writing.
