Module 1 Instructor Guidance

Please review the Parts of Speech as a refresher; in order to talk about "fixing" grammar errors, you must know the terms.  Additionally, knowing the parts of speech helps you understand how to manipulate language to express yourself in both speaking and writing.

One example of this is the fact that a single word can function as a different part of speech depending on its usage.  Let's look at the example of the word "Running" and examine the different ways it can be used.

  • Running is great exercise. - Running is a noun in this sentence.
  • I heard the sound of running water and realized I hadn't turned off the faucet. - Running in this sentence is functioning as an adjective describing water.
  • I'm running the LA Marathon next year. - In this sentence, running is part of the verb phrase.
