In chapter seven, Yoli says, “We’re a family of mad poets.”

What?  Where?  Who? Why?

Here is what I want you to do:  Explain the meaning of “mad poet.”

1. Summarize the scene

• Who is Yoli talking to?
• What is she talking about?
• What is she worried about?

2. What do you think is the meaning of “mad poet”?

• Start with a poet – what is it to be a poet? (Jay’s tip:  think of their internal struggle)
• Who in the family is a poet? What is he/she struggling with?
• What does it mean to be “mad.” (Jay’s Tip: it doesn’t really mean angry.)

3. Yoli is in this family. So, what is she “mad” about?

  * Think about it.  How old is she.  What's going on in her world?

4. What do you think about Yoli now? Is this book all bout Chuy?  Or is there something important happening to Yoli?

*  Don't forget that this is the sixties!  How long is she going to take it - letting men make all the decisions for her?
