Make bold choices and make mistakes. It's all those things that add up to the person you become.

Jay’s Tips for Writing a Conclusion ( with help from the website LE0: Literacy Education Online)

Estimados Estudiantes,

Conclusions are often the most difficult part of an essay to write, and many writers feel that they have nothing left to say after having written the paper. A writer needs to keep in mind that the conclusion is often what a reader remembers best. Your conclusion should be the best part of your paper.

  • Below I provide you with strategies for writing an effective conclusion
  • At the end of this post, I provide you with my sample conclusion for my Angelina Jolie Tattoo Essay

A conclusion should

  • stress the importance of the thesis statement,
  • give the essay a sense of completeness, and
  • leave a final impression on the reader.

Suggestions

  • Answer the question "So What?"

Show your readers why this paper was important. Show them that your paper was meaningful and useful.

  • Synthesize, don't summarize
    • Don't simply repeat things that were in your paper. They have read it. Show them how the points you made and the support and examples you used were not random, but fit together.
  • Redirect your readers
    • Give your reader something to think about, perhaps a way to use your paper in the "real" world. If your introduction went from general to specific, make your conclusion go from specific to general. Think globally.
  • Create a new meaning
    • You don't have to give new information to create a new meaning. By demonstrating how your ideas work together, you can create a new picture. Often the sum of the paper is worth more than its parts.

This is what I did:

I tried to answer the “So What?” question

I summarized my admiration for Angelina.

 * I love my tattoo of Angelina Jolie, but I doubt if any of her own tattoos will ever pay tribute to another actor or actress. I see her as a leader, not a follower.  Her tattoos are dedicated to important ideas, not famous people.  . On her left shoulder she displays a Buddhist blessing that is there to protect her adopted Cambodian son.  On her right forearm, she has Arabic Script that translates to “Determination.” Her tattoo  on her le left arm was inspired  from the words of famous playwright Tennessee Williams: "A prayer for the wild at heart, kept in cages."    No Marilyn Monroe.  No Bette Davis.

I concluded with my final thoughts for tattoos:

  • What I admire most about Angelina is her dedication to being her own woman. Here is my problem with tattoos: although the artwork on your skin can express your sense of individuality, they can also reveal your need to be like someone else. I don’t see that as being very rebellious.

I made a final suggestion to the reader:

  • In my opinion, a person’s real sense of individuality can’t be expressed on the surface of the skin. A person’s true individuality is embedded in the heart.   I’m an English teacher.  I think when a person has something truly important to say, he/she should find the words to write it down.

Here is what it looks like when I copy and paste everything together:
