Tips for Proper Netiquette/Communicating Online
- When emailing your instructor, address them as Professor [Last Name], tell them who you are, and what specific class you are in.
- Write in complete sentences and proofread!
- Be polite and professional: Remember that tone is hard to read in text. Instead of using emojis (which are perceived as immature), try to be extra polite and nice in your writing. Avoid Sarcasm.
- Remember that the student code of conduct applies even online Links to an external site.. Therefore, any posts with discriminatory language, or that “borrow” from another student or online source without citing can be considered inappropriate or a violation of academic integrity. - Remember this is a professional environment! Use proper netiquette!
- Avoid the trap of “out of sight/ out of mind” by working on a consistent schedule.
- Schedule work for the same day and time each week, just as you would for a face-to-face class.
- Set reminders in your phone so you don't forget about the class and due dates.
- Save the syllabus and add the schedule of events to your workspace/calendar.
- Work ahead when you have time so when you are busy later, you won't feel overwhelmed.
- Check your grades weekly to make sure you read any feedback and ask for clarification if you don't understand all feedback.

- Attend the instructor's office hours.
- Email the instructor with questions or if the course has a Q&A thread, use it!
- If you are not able to attend the office hours, try to arrange a separate meeting with the instructor.
- Ask if the instructor will review rough drafts.
- Use the TASC for help with all assignments.
- Get the accommodations letter to your instructors right away so they can arrange your DSPS accommodations.

Communicate Regularly
- Check your COD email or forward your COD email to an address you check daily.
- Update your email address, profile photo, and preferred name on Canvas prior to the semester start.
- Use the Canvas Help immediately when you have technical issues. Click on the Help Icon in the lower left hand side of the navigation toolbar
- If you are unsure if an assignment has been submitted correctly, use the Canvas Help and email the instructor.
- Check to make sure your posts are visible before you log off.
